Loch Ness and Inverness Attractions for your Bucket List

There’s no better start to the New Year than writing a bucket list of things to see and do. So, why not add a trip to Loch Ness and Inverness to your travel bucket list? Here we have fascinating attractions, fun activities and spectacular landscapes.

So, here are our top five attractions in Loch Ness and Inverness to add to your list:

Loch Ness

Famous for being the home of the legendary Loch Ness monster, this beautiful loch (lake) stretches 23 miles long. It’s 230 metres deep and is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Great Glen.

While its dramatic landscapes draw thousands of annual visitors, so does the mystery of the loch’s famous monster. With the first photograph of Nessie emerging in 1933, many have claimed to have seen this long green creature in the vast loch for centuries.

You can take a boat trip from various locations around the loch, enjoy a Nessie exploration at the Loch Ness Centre, or enjoy the stunning views with a picnic on the banks of the loch.

Don't forget Loch Ness is best explored and not just driven past, make time to enjoy the local communities and what they have to offer.

Urquhart Castle

Sitting on the banks of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle is one of the most popular attractions in Inverness.

Here, you can explore the historic ruins of a castle that has seen centuries of political, religious and regal activity. Perched on a peninsula, Urquhart Castle boasts panoramic views of the vast sparkling loch and lush rolling hills.

Start at the visitor centre where you’ll learn about its turbulent history. Then, take a tour of the stony ruins that date back 1,000 years. Next, enjoy a tasty homemade treat and castle views in the café. Finish by heading to the gift shop to pick up a Scottish souvenir.

Falls of Foyers

The majestic Falls of Foyers look like something out of a fairy-tale and are one of the region’s best places to visit.

Here, the River Foyers drops 140 feet into a deep gorge which then runs into Loch Ness. Start in the car park at the top and follow the trail down to the cascading falls. Then, carry on the path, following it down to the Loch Ness shores and soak up sweeping lake views.

After your walk enjoy a warm drink, lunch or tasty treat at nearby Cameron's Tea Rooms

These falls are one of Scotland’s best natural attractions and if you love waterfalls, walks and nature we are so lucky to have so many beautiful places like this to visit. Find out more in our guide to walks, wildlife and hidden gems.

Experience the powerful emotions of the Battle of Culloden in the visitor centre’s 360-degree battle immersion theatre, which puts you right in the heart of the action. The richly researched Culloden Visitor Centre, which stands beside the battlefield, features artefacts and interactive displays that reveal the background to the conflict. It is both a monument and a guide to a pivotal day in Scottish history.

You will need a rest and warm drink in the cafe after a walk around the battlefield or exhibition and the on site gift shop has some beautiful Scottish gifts and produce to remind you of your visit.
